Spanish Soccer- Barcelona Maintains its Leadership by Defeating Deportivo La Coruña

The Spanish Liga champion, FC Barcelona won this past Saturday with a 3-1 against Deportivo Coruña, in a duel corresponding to the 13th date of La Liga. With this win, Barça remains as the leader of the standings with 36 points, ahead of Real Madrid by 5 points. This game’s star was Lionel Messi, who with two goals; the first after a great shot and the other after a header inside the area, gave the victory to the Culé team that dominated completely the first half. However they had to put in a great effort to beat a tough Deportivo, who raised an ultra defensive game plan. Despite being tremendously superior during the first 40 minutes and enjoying some very clear options, Barcelona could scored only once in hands of Messi. The Argentinean opened the scoring after 27 minutes, with a tight left-footed shot at the edge of the area. However, ten minutes later, at minute 37, Adrián López in a strange play, scored for Deportivo and tied the score. After taking advantage of a long pass by Daniel Aranzubia, Adrián scored to end first half 1-1. The second half was dominated by Guardiola’s team, but with a caveat: the game was no longer the same. Barcelona got stuck in the midfield and some of the blame was to be placed upon Deportivo la Coruña, who knew how to plug all the holes defensively. This defense found a key in Manuel Pablo who`s exceptional work complimented Coruña’s effort. The Depor was a wall that neither Henry nor Ibrahimovic could overcome. However, the home team could only hope for a draw, since their offensive attacks were few and almost harmless. Deportivo was hoping to make another goal in this half but Barcelona was controlling the ball. Nevertherless, Barcelona failed to keep that stamina of the first half and it wasn’t until Guardiola substituted Thierry Henry for Pedro Rodríguez that Barça find their way to their second goal. 79 minutes into the game, the Brazilian Pedro from the penalty spot made a great pass to Messi, who with a header left goalkeeper Arazumbia with no chances. After that goal, Deportivo coach, Miguel Angel Lotina, began to make some changes in the midfield, and at minute 87, Guardado left the midfield for Pablo Alvarez. Despite having only few minutes left before the final whistle, the Catalans didn’t recover much and at minute 88 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was left with a wide open space in the penalty area defined with a right shot and got the third goal for his team, by which he reached his 10th personal goal of the season. This third goal ended the game 3-1 for Barcelona. After the game, Barça coach Pep Guardiola expressed his satisfaction on the team’s performance and hoped his team would keep getting better each game. “I am very pleased with the performance of the team. We controlled the game on a pitch where it is very difficult to win. We played very well in the first half and we rediscovered the form that we had shown in the past. That is why I consider this to be such an important win,” stated Guardiola. On the other hand, Depor’s coach Miguel Angel Lotina said he was really happy of the way his team played despite losing at the end. “It was more or less what we expected. We put in a great effort, but it’s not easy to endure them for ninety minutes. I can’t take anything away from the players. We are a team that works very hard,” expressed Lotina. ?
